The dangers of childbirth for U.S. mothers

When things go wrong during childbirth, the ramifications can be significant. For one, it could result in children suffering birth injuries. It could also expose mothers to harm.

Unfortunately, it appears that mothers facing serious dangers in connection to childbirth is not nearly as uncommon in the U.S. as one would hope. A recent USA Today report indicates that, among countries in the developed world, America is the most dangerous place for mothers to give birth.

Reportedly, tens of thousands of women suffer serious childbirth-related injuries here in the U.S. every year.

Childbirth-related complications sometimes get so severe that they take mothers’ lives. Sadly, the U.S. sees hundreds of such maternal deaths a year.

How often do such deaths occur here in Illinois? Over the 2012 to 2016 period, the state saw 14.7 maternal deaths for every 100,000 births. This puts the state at 36th in the nation for maternal death rate.

Many things could up the dangers of childbirth. One is medical professionals not taking the right steps before, during and after delivery. This may be far more common than one would hope. For example, according to the USA Today report, hospital workers here in the U.S. sometimes fall short of best practices when it comes to the prevention of childbirth-related complications regarding hemorrhaging and hypertension.

When mothers suffer harm in relation to childbirth due to malpractice, they can have important rights regarding the pursuit of compensation. Now, proving delivery-related medical malpractice can have its challenges. So, when looking into bringing a malpractice claim in connection to suspected delivery-related negligence, it can be important for individuals to reach out for guidance on the strength of their claim and help with building their case.
