A variety of factors contribute to nursing home abuse

The fact that many Illinois personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis provides some form of relief for the concerned family and friends of elderly people who may be victims of abuse, as they have somewhere to turn for advice. Nursing home abuse and neglect is unfortunately a phenomena that has been on the increase in our society over the last few decades. In order to curb this kind of behavior, vigilance is needed.

It is seldom that the abuse or neglect of an elderly victim can be ascribed to a single cause. In most cases, a variety of factors come into play. One major factor is the understaffing of facilities. Some people have gone so far as calling this practice of nursing facilities decreasing their staff to increase profits as criminal behavior.

When there are too few quality caregivers, the attention of the caregivers available are required by too many. This leads to residents of the facilities not getting the required care and attention they need, which constitutes neglect. Neglect is a form of abuse. However, abuse also happens due to under staffing, as the available staff may take short cuts, be in too much of a hurry to get done, or not follow the prescribed steps of a specific care program.

Another factor that may lead to neglect and abuse is the personal problems caregivers face in their own lives. Caregivers who bring their problems to work may take out their frustrations on the residents of the facility. If the problems are financial in nature, residents may be taken advantage of or their possessions may be stolen. Even medication is stolen to feed drug habits.

Nursing home abuse and neglect do not only happen in facilities; they also occur relatives care for the elderly person. No matter who is caring for the elderly person, friends and relatives should watch out for any warning signs and act on their suspicions. Anybody who suspects the abuse of an elderly person by caregivers may benefit from consulting with an Illinois personal injury lawyer to obtain advice on the best course of action to take.
