Illinois roads can be hazardous for drivers who are traveling in the safest of vehicles, but motorcyclists can be faced with greater danger due to their exposure. Motorcyclists can be easy to miss by other drivers under even the most perfect weather and road conditions. However, when car accidents occur due to intoxication, tragic results can often occur.
Recently, a car-motorcycle wreck occurred in Champaign that resulted in a person’s death. According to police, a 31-year-old man was driving westbound on a local street at 3:35 p.m. when he either did not stop completely at an intersection or accelerated rapidly after pausing briefly at a stop sign. When he moved through the intersection, a 61-year-old motorcyclist slammed into his vehicle.
The cyclist was thrown from his motorcycle and received significant head injuries. The man passed away the following morning at a local hospital. When the driver of the car was asked to perform field sobriety tests at the scene of the accident, officers noticed signs of impairment. A breath test that was administered after the man’s arrest showed his blood alcohol content to be .22 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit. The driver has since been charged with a total of four felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.
Surviving loved ones who are facing similar losses may not know where they can turn for help during such emotional times. Many attorneys who have experience in personal injury litigation do not charge clients any up-front fees when they evaluate cases. Typically, they work on a contingency basis, which means that a client is not required to pay them until they receive a positive financial judgement after a civil trial.
Victims and loved ones in Illinois who are facing the aftermaths of similar motorcycle and car accidents may benefit from discussing their situations with attorneys who focus on personal injury law and litigation. There are many expenses that can result from such a tragic event that are unexpected, such as medical bills, loss of wages and other financial obligations. An attorney can discuss the various legal options available during such a difficult time.
