When a loved one is injured in a nursing home, determining what steps to take can be confusing. One option you have is to call an attorney that is experienced in handling nursing home claims to get advice. Additionally, in Illinois, the state, by and through the Illinois Department of Public Health, conducts investigations into injuries of nursing home residents resulting from abuse or neglect. This service is separate and apart from hiring an attorney. To have the Illinois Department of Public Health investigate potential signs of abuse or neglect, you can call the Illinois Department of Public Health Nursing Home Hotline and report the situation to (800) 252-4343.
Please note that the Illinois Department of Public Health does not take the place of an attorney and they cannot bring a lawsuit on your behalf. What they can do is investigate for any signs of abuse and neglect to help protect residents of the nursing home from future instances of abuse and neglect. Often, if abuse or neglect is determined by the investigator, they will write a report highlighting their findings.
When you call the Illinois Department of Public Health, make sure you have the following information ready to provide them:
- The date of the occurrence (if unknown, or multiple dates, let them know);
- The name of the nursing home in question;
- The specific allegation(s) of abuse or neglect that you have;
- Conversations you had with any employees of the nursing home related to the incident(s); and
- Any witnesses that may have seen the incident(s).
There may be additional information that is requested of you during your telephone call with the investigator.
