73-year-old Maria Ramos was a resident at Woodbridge Nursing Home, located at 2242 N. Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Police say that Maria suffers from dementia, and eloped from the facility in the early morning hours on May 28, 2015. Police are asking anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Maria to call the Area North Special Victims Unit at (312) 744-8261.
Maria’s situation is tragic, but all too common. Nursing homes, and other medical facilities, have a duty to protect residents from facility elopement. The fact is, most elopement situations are preventable with appropriate care and supervision from trained staff.
To prevent these tragic situations from happening to your family, there are several things you can do:
- Ask staff about a wander guard, which will alert staff if a resident tries to ambulate to a location he or she shouldn’t be in
- Ask staff about moving your loved one to a secured floor, or a floor without direct access to the elements
The nursing home attorneys at Rosenberg, Rosenberg, Eisenberg & Associates, LLC, hope that Maria is found safe and returned to her family uninjured.
