Alleged drunk driver kills construction worker in Chicago

A man who prosecutors are now saying was drunk behind the wheel of his van was involved in an accident in Chicago that took the life of a construction worker. The man is just 19 years old, and he was driving a van back from a party. Reports indicate that he had been involved in a fight at that party.

The crash happened in a construction zone at about 4:15 a.m. The driver was apparently swerving back and forth, dodging around the barriers in the construction site, and going at quite a high speed while doing so. This wild ride came to an end when he smashed into the back of a paving machine being driven by a 37-year-old worker.

That driver was not hurt in the crash, but his partner that he had worked with for the past 14 years, a 58-year-old man, was struck and killed. He was behind the paving machine at the time and was actually struck by the van before it crashed into the machine. The impact tossed him to the side of the work area. The entire incident took place quite quickly, and he did not have time to get out of the way.

The legal limit in Illinois is .08, and it is now being said that the young driver had a blood alcohol content of at least twice that.

The loss of a loved one in a drunk driving accident can be devastating, and people need to make sure that they know what rights they have when this occurs. If the loved one was the main breadwinner for the family, for example, they may be able to pursue compensation for lost future wages.
