Drivers may face unexpected charges in car accidents

It is always tragic when a wreck results in a fatality. This is especially true when people are killed in car accidents in which one driver flees. There are many situations where a victim could be saved if someone immediately reported the accident and rendered aid. An Illinois man was recently indicted for two serious charges stemming from leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated reckless driving.

According to a prosecutor, two men were involved in a wreck at just before 7:30 p.m. one night in late April. Police allege that the drivers were on a local Chillicothe street at speeds that may have topped 90 mph. In the ensuing accident, one driver was ejected from his vehicle. The other driver left the scene of the accident without rendering aid to the victim. The victim passed away from the head injuries he received in the crash.

Legal counsel may assist victims' families in determining the correct steps to take in similar cases. Consulting an attorney regarding these matters does not usually require clients to pay any up-front costs. Most attorneys in these circumstances work on a contingency basis and do not require payment until the case is settled or an award is granted at trial.

Though the vehicle operated by the man who has been indicted did not strike the other car, he must still face the criminal charges. The family members of Illinois victims in fatal car accidents could benefit in reaching out to an attorney who focuses on personal injury litigation. An attorney who has this kind of practice may be in the best position to discuss the pursing civil litigation and the legal options available to family members of victims.
