How To Guarantee Good Care In A Nursing Home

Clients ask our attorneys all of the time, "How can I guarantee my loved one gets good care in a nursing home?" The truth is, there is no guarantee, but there are steps you can take to help make sure your loved one gets the care that was promised.

Families can spend weeks or even months trying to find the right nursing home for their loved one, but even after locating what you think is an ideal facility, your work isn't over. A nursing home may promise that they will give your loved one very specific care, but promising and following through on that promise are two entirely different things.

After you place your loved one in a nursing home, make sure you visit them often and ask them the following questions:

1) Do you like the staff? Are they treating you well?

2) Do you like the other residents at the nursing home?

3) Do you feel safe?

4) Do you feel respected?

5) When you need help and you push the call button, how long does it take for a nurse to come help you?

6) Who is your favorite caregiver?

While these questions may seem obvious, and you would expect your loved one to tell you if something is wrong, often abuse or neglect go unreported because of fear or the thought that they are being a burden by complaining. The last question about your loved one's favorite caregiver is important because it will show if they have made a connection with any of the staff members. Connections are important, especially if your loved one is suffering from any cognitive disorders like Dementia or Alzheimer's.

In addition to asking your loved one questions, ask staff how your loved one is doing, as well. Ask:

1) Does she participate in activities?

2) Does she have friends?

3) What time does she wake up?

4) Is she eating her meals?

Confirm with your loved ones that the answers you get from staff are matching up with the answers you get from your loved one.

If you are concerned that your loved one is not getting the care and treatment that they need and deserve, give one of our Illinois lawyers a call to find out more about your options.
