Van reportedly driven by drunk kills pedestrian

A van that police believe was driven by an intoxicated motorist ran into a pedestrian on Illinois 157 in Caseyville, Illinois. The pedestrian, a 29-year-old local resident, suffered fatal injuries. The van hit him from the back, so it is believed that he did know see the vehicle approaching.

The accident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on a weekday. Illinois State Police, at the time, were already investigating phoned in reports about an erratically moving vehicle, believed to be the white van involved in the accident. The van's male driver suffered injuries to his legs and ankles that were described as not life threatening.

Each year, thousands are killed in a fatal drunk driving accident. In St. Clair County alone, 25 people were killed by being struck by vehicles in the five years concluding with the end of 2012. A total of 147 people were killed in traffic accidents in the county during that time, with approximately 37 percent of them killed by drunk drivers. In this instance, the impact of the van threw the victim about 151 feet from the shoulder of the highway where he was hit. Witnesses described seeing the man's shoes on the shoulder, where he was struck, along with his wallet and baseball cap.

Investigators closed off a portion of the highway to work on reconstructing the accident. The results of toxicology tests conducted were not yet known. So far, no criminal charges have been lodged against the driver. Criminal prosecution, however, does not provide any compensation to the victims or their families. For that, private lawsuits for personal injury or wrongful death are a necessity to both compensate the injured and the families of the deceased and deter future such incidents.
